Pentazocine drugs are primarily used to treat body pain. Pentazocine is a narcotics analgesic drug. repeated use of pentazocine drugs developed psychological and physical dependence. Pentazocine is a synthetic narcotic drug. that belongs to the benzomorphan class of narcotics. Some patients may occur these side effects, Depression, cough, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, dryness of mouth, irritability, drowsiness, difficulty in seeing, and hearing may occur.
Pentazocine drugs are banned in some countries.
Pentazocine used
- Chronic pain,
- Recurrent moderately severe pain associated with surgery,
- Trauma,
- Colic,
- Burns,
- Pre-anesthetic medication.
Dosages of pentazocine drugs
Oral dose
Severe pain
Adult - doses are 50 mg to 100mg every 3-4 hrs.
maximum 600 mg daily.
Children
6 years to 12 years of age 25 mg every 3- 4 Hrs.
Injection
Moderate to severe pain
Adult
dose - 30 mg to 60 mg by SC, IM, or IV injection is given interval of 3-4 hrs.
Child
up to 1 year.
1 mg/kg by Sc, IM, or IV
500 mcg/kg intervals of 3-4 hrs.
Rectal doses
Moderate to severe pain
Adult
dose 50 mg suppository up to 4 times daily,
The child is not recommended.
Should not be used contraindications
- Head injury
- Narcotic dependence
- Respiratory depression
- Raised intracranial pressure
- Heart failure
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Porphyria
- Pregnancy.
Should be Use with the special precaution of following
- Avoid movement for 15 minutes after injection,
- Avoid alcohol,
- Avoid driving,
- Avoid handling machinery,
- Caution in cases of respiratory depression,
- Hypertension.
Side effects of Pentazocine drugs
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Euphoria
- Sedation
- Dizziness
- Minor psychic disturbances, rapid IV injection may cause cardiac/respiratory depression
- Chronic IM use may cause soft tissue reaction at the injection site.
