uses of erythrocyte sedimentation rate

Erythrocyte sedimentation rate:

It is the rate at which erythrocytes sedimentation takes place on their own weight when anticoagulant. Blood is held in a vertical column. It is expressed as the fall of RBC 
in mm at the end of the first hour.


The normal range of ESR,

  • Male - 5 mm at the end of the first hour
  • Female  - 0  -  7 mm at the end of the first hour.



Wintrobe method;


  • Male  -    0  - 9  mm at the end of the first hour,

  • Female  - 0  -20  mm at the end of the first hour.

The erythrocyte sedimentation rate is used to identify the following diseases and disease conditions.
High ESR value is found in,

  • Rheumatic fever,
  • Rheumatoid arthritis,
  • Tuberculosis,
  • Allergy,
  • Syphilis,
  • Cancer,
  • Pneumonia,
  • malignant tumors.
