The salivary glands help us digestion of food

The salivary gland: The human mouth cavity (buccal cavity) contains teeth, tongue, and salivary glands. Teeth cut the food into small pieces, chew and grind. teeth help in physical digestion.

The salivary glands in our mouth produce saliva.the tongue helps in mixing this saliva with food. Saliva is a watery liquid.

The salivary glands help in chemical digestion by secreting an enzyme. The human saliva contains an enzyme called salivary amylase.

The saliva is secreted by three pairs of salivary glands. The most common type of infection of salivary glands is salivary stones. Salivary stones are formed of crystallized saliva deposits.

Salivary stones block the flow of saliva results it back up into the gland causes infection and swelling.

Location of salivary glands::

  1. Below the tongue,
  2. the base of the ear and
  3. The inner side of the angles of the lower jaws.

  • The saliva binds the food particles and makes them into a mass called the bolus.
  • Digestion begins in the mouth.
  • Saliva contains enzyme amylase that helps in the breakdown of starch to simple sugar
